Comedian Kristen Becker

Comedian-Kristen-Becker-PhotoFor more than ten years, Becker has loved bringing her raucous point-of-view comedy to audiences all over the continent.  Toronto’s Xtra!  lauded her “brash and personal humor.” As the winner of the Queen City Comedy Competition, she took the largely male-dominated genre by storm. It’s no surprise. After all, Kristen Becker is screamingly funny. Her wide-ranging comedy is rowdy, political, personal, intelligent, and unrelentingly honest. A comedian who happens to also be an out lesbian, Becker consistently wins the hearts of all audiences, straight and gay alike, with her unapologetic humor. Her childhood, divided between the Rust Belt and the Deep South, has left her uniquely able to connect with all manner of people. Becker’s ability to win the affection of such a wide range of audiences is due to her understated southern charm juxtaposed against a raucous and powerful persona. She is truly a comic of the people.

Film Screening: Lovelace (2013)
Q&A with Prof. Andy Smith, Associate Professor and Program Chair, Film and Media Studies Program & Gene Kelly, Associate Dean of Intercultural Development

lovelaceIn 1972—before the internet, before the porn explosion—Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda Lovelace. Escaping a strict religious family, Linda discovered freedom and the high-life when she fell for and married charismatic hustler Chuck Traynor. As Linda Lovelace she became an international sensation—less centerfold fantasy than a charming girl-next-door with an impressive capacity for fellatio. Fully inhabiting her new identity, Linda became an enthusiastic spokesperson for sexual freedom and uninhibited hedonism. Six years later she presented another, utterly contradictory, narrative to the world—and herself as the survivor of a far darker story. (from www.thelovelacemovie.com)
